Cut-off Saw Operations – Civil Construction

South Australia

ENDORSED BY THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SKILLS COMMISSION

Course Overview

This micro-credential provides participants with the required skills and knowledge to enable the use of a cut-off saw in a safe and proficient manner in the workplace. Due the vast variety of utilisation there is no specific unit that addresses the cut off saw applications in civil construction work. The user often will use the saw in compromising positions causing opposite forces making the kickback of the saw very difficult to control. The gap training identified is to provide information to the operator enabling them to make better informed decisions when using the saw and ensure the user has identified safer processes and procedures when using the saw.

This is why we have incorporated three main modules that will assist in providing the rounding of the operator to combat multiple scenarios they encounter on site and or understand the risks to stop an evaluate before potentially putting themselves at risk.

The additional non-accredited training is crucial to this skill set as it practically addresses the following key areas:

  • Operator responsibilities and PPE requirements
  • Inspections before starting
  • Starting the saw
  • Operating the saw
  • Risks associated with Free-hand cutting (reactive forces – pulling/pushing) and other safer equipment options
  • Maintenance
  • Trolley/cart mounted operation
    • Dry and wet cutting
    • Cutting different materials (concrete and steel)
